Olivia Mitchell is a Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Manchester’s Department of History (L5). Her research focuses on 19th-century British Empire press depictions, gender, race, and digital methodologies. She holds a PhD from Loughborough University (2021), an MA from the University of Manchester (2017), and a BA in History of Art from the University of Warwick (2015). She has contributed to two journal articles during her tenure as a Research Assistant at Loughborough University (2023–2024).
Education:
- PhD in History, Loughborough University (2021): Thesis on Anglophone press representations of the Begums of Bhopal, 1857–1912
- MA in History, University of Manchester (2017)
- BA in History of Art, University of Warwick (2015)
Research Interests: Visual and digital histories of the 19th century, intersectionality of gender/race in colonial contexts, press analysis, and British imperial narratives. She is converting her doctoral work into a monograph analyzing the Nawab Begums of Bhopal through digital annotation methods.
Teaching: Teaches modules on British/European/Asian history, art history, and interdisciplinary topics like ‘War, Conflict and Culture’ and ‘Race, Migration and Humanitarianism.’
Funding & Grants: AHRC-funded doctoral research (2015–2021).
Labs/Teams: Engaged in digital humanities projects and collaborative research on imperial histories.
