Lucy Bland is Professor of Social and Cultural History at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), based in Cambridge. She holds academic affiliations with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, and the Humanities and Social Sciences School. Her research focuses on gender, race, and sexuality in 19th-20th century Britain, particularly mixed-race communities and the historical treatment of Black GI-British offspring during WWII. She leads the Labour History Research Unit and has held editorial roles in major journals like Women’s History Review and Feminist Review.
Education:

Her research interests include British feminisms, eugenics, transracial adoption, and gender relations. Recent projects investigate interracial portside communities in interwar Britain and mixed-race identity formation. She has secured multiple grants, including a BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant (2021–2023) and a Being Human Festival award for her 'Brown Babies' exhibition, which won the Museums Association’s Best Digital Engagement Award (2021). Other accolades include the Social History Society’s 2019 Book Prize for Britain’s ‘Brown Babies’.
Teaching: She teaches modules on gender/sexuality history (1880s–1980s), modern British politics, and race/racism in the Modern Britain MA program.
