Oliver Howes is a Professor of Molecular Psychiatry and Head of the Psychosis Studies Department at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). His clinical role includes leading a team for treatment-resistant psychotic disorders at the Maudsley Hospital. He heads the Psychiatric Imaging Group, focusing on neurobiological mechanisms of mental illnesses and translational research, particularly in schizophrenia and psychosis. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice, emphasizing novel treatments and imaging techniques like PET and fMRI.
His research interests include molecular psychiatry, synaptic biology, and the development of biomarkers for mental health disorders. He has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Schizophrenia International Research Society Translational Research Award (2024) and the ACNP Joel Elkes Research Award (2022). He leads initiatives like the STRATA study on treatment-resistant schizophrenia and collaborates internationally on projects like the PSYSCAN consortium.
Key achievements include pioneering studies on dopamine pathways in psychosis, synaptic density markers in autism, and the impact of antipsychotics on physiology. His group develops radiotracers and preclinical models to advance drug development. He also addresses clinical challenges, such as optimizing clozapine use and improving mental health outcomes through personalized treatment approaches.
