Professor Alice Egerton is a Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology at King’s College London, affiliated with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) and the Department of Psychosis Studies. She holds a leadership role as Deputy Lead of the Experimental Medicine and Novel Therapeutics Theme at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. Her research focuses on understanding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying schizophrenia and individual variability in treatment responses, utilizing advanced neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional MRI. She is also the Programme Leader for the MSc in Psychiatric Research, contributing to the education of future researchers in psychiatry.
Her work emphasizes the role of glutamate and dopamine systems in schizophrenia pathophysiology and treatment, including studies on clozapine’s neurobiological effects in treatment-resistant cases. Key projects include the STRATA collaboration examining glutamate and dopamine interactions and the CLEAR trial investigating clozapine efficacy in early psychosis. Her research has led to insights into cerebral blood flow, genetic markers, and immune system interactions in psychosis.
Recent publications highlight advancements in neuroimaging techniques, such as FDOPA PET analysis frameworks and transcriptional signatures of cerebral blood flow alterations. Collaborations with international cohorts and multi-site studies underscore her work’s global impact. Notable contributions include identifying glutamate as a predictor of antipsychotic response and exploring the role of inflammation in treatment outcomes.
Professor Egerton supervises PhD students and leads initiatives like the ‘Inspiring Women’ exhibition at IoPPN. Her academic leadership extends to grant-funded projects, including studies on glial markers in cannabis use and neurodevelopmental perspectives in schizophrenia drug development.
