Professor Oliver Fahle holds the Professorship for Film Studies with a focus on Film Theory and Film Aesthetics at the Institute for Media Studies within the Faculty of Philology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB). His office is located in Room GB 1/136, and he maintains regular office hours on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Professor Fahle's research spans film theory, film aesthetics, and documentary studies, with current focus on infrastructure representation in cinematic works. His leadership in the upcoming subproject "Infrastructure Scenes in Film" (starting October 2025) within the DFG research group "Infrastructure: Aesthetics and Supply" demonstrates his commitment to exploring how infrastructure appears and functions in film narratives. His decade-long involvement with documentary studies is evidenced by his application for and leadership in the Graduate School "The Documentary. Excess and Withdrawal" (2016-2025).
Throughout his career, Professor Fahle has held significant administrative positions including Dean of the Faculty of Philology (2021-2023), Vice Dean (2019-2021), and Managing Director of the Institute for Media Studies (2013-2015). He has been Head of the international Master's program "Film and Audiovisual Media," shaping graduate education in media studies. His collaborative projects include the "Horizons West" film series featuring seminal Westerns and organizing major academic conferences such as the IMACS colloquium in Montréal (2023) and the "AGAINST DOCUMENTATION" International Conference (2018).
