Friedrich Balke is a Professor of Media Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, specializing in the theory, history, and aesthetics of visual documentary forms. He previously held professorships at the Bauhaus University Weimar (2007-2012) and the University of Bonn (2012). Balke has been a visiting professor at Columbia University (2006) and held fellowships at institutions including the IKKM Weimar and Humboldt University Berlin. His research focuses on sovereign power, French philosophy (Deleuze/Foucault), media historiography, and mimetic practices. He leads the DFG Research Group 'The Documentary. Excess and Withdrawal' and previously co-chaired the 'Media Historiographies' graduate school.
Education: Studied German, Philosophy, and Education at Ruhr University Bochum (graduated 1980), earned his doctorate (1995) and habilitation (2006) there. Served as scientific director of the Collaborative Research Center 'Media and Cultural Communication' (2000-2007) and Vice Rector at Bauhaus University (2010-2011).
Research interests span sovereign power dynamics, media preconditions of governance, and the cultural history of mimesis. He co-edits the 'Archive for Media History' and contributes to 'cargo. Film. Media. Culture.'
