معرفی
Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS is a distinguished physiologist serving as Professor at Cardiff School of Biosciences, Cardiff University since 2010, and Academic Director of the Academia Europaea Cardiff Knowledge Hub since 2015. Previously, he was Director of Cardiff School of Biosciences (2010-2015), George Holt Professor of Physiology and Head of Physiology Department at University of Liverpool (1981-2009), and Symers Professor and Head of Physiology at University of Dundee (1975-1981).
Professor Petersen's research focuses on calcium signaling, particularly cellular Ca2+ signaling processes in pancreatic acinar cells and their role in patho-physiological studies of pancreatitis. His laboratory pioneered patch clamp recordings in epithelial cells, identifying novel Ca2+-activated ion channels, with findings published in high-impact journals including Nature. In the 1990s, his team discovered intracellular Ca2+ tunnels in the endoplasmic reticulum and identified the nuclear envelope as a dynamic Ca2+ store. More recently, his work has focused on pancreatic stellate cells and potential therapies for acute pancreatitis, including the protective effects of galactose.
Professor Petersen's publications demonstrate consistent focus on calcium signaling mechanisms across multiple physiological systems, with increasing emphasis on translational applications to pancreatic diseases. His most recent work examines novel therapeutic approaches to pancreatitis through modulation of calcium signaling pathways.
- Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for 'Services to Science' (2008)
- Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) (2000)
- Academia Europaea Gold Medal Award (2021)
- International Association of Pancreatology's Palade Prize and Medal (2022)
- American Physiological Society's Walter B Cannon Memorial Award (2018)
- Honorary Member of multiple international academies including Hungarian Academy of Sciences
Professor Petersen has held significant leadership roles including Vice-President of Academia Europaea (2015-2023), President of the Physiological Society (UK) (2006-2008), and Secretary General of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (2001-2010). He chaired the UK Government's REF2014 Biological Sciences Panel and currently serves on the REF2029 People, Culture and Environment Pilot Panel. His laboratory at Cardiff continues to investigate pancreatic physiology and pathophysiology.
Professor Petersen leads research activities through the Academia Europaea Cardiff Knowledge Hub, which works with SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) as part of the European Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism. His work bridges fundamental cellular physiology with clinical applications in pancreatic disease.
