Michael R. Duchen is Professor of Physiology at University College London's Department of Cell and Developmental Biology since 1999, with continuous academic appointments at UCL since 1978. His research bridges mitochondrial biology, cellular signaling, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Education:
- B.A. (First Class) Physiological Sciences, Merton College Oxford (1975)
- M.B., B.S. (Distinction in Medicine), St. George's Hospital Medical School (1978)
- M.R.C.P. (U.K.) (1980)
- Ph.D., University College London (1984)
Research Focus: Duchen investigates calcium signaling mechanisms, mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease), and ischaemia-reperfusion injury across cardiac, neural, and renal systems. His work emphasizes oxidative stress pathways and mitochondrial cell biology in health and disease, utilizing biophysical and physiological approaches to understand cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration and organ damage.
Professional Recognition:
- Member of Academia Europaea (2007)
- Honorary Membership, International Society for Neurochemistry
- Editorial roles: Journal of Physiology (1997-2005), Biochemical Journal (2004-), PLoS Physiology (2007-)
Academic Service: Active in The Physiological Society, American Society for Neuroscience, Biophysical Society, and European Calcium Society. Served as Royal Society University Research Fellow (1984-1992) and held clinical positions at St. George's Hospital (1978-1981) before transitioning to full-time research.
