Octave Debary is a Lecturer (Maître de conférences) with HDR at Paris Descartes University, affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Institute of Contemporary Anthropology (IIAC), LAHIC research team (UMR 8177, CNRS-EHESS), Paris. His work bridges anthropology, museology, and cultural studies, focusing on material culture, memory, and heritage.
His research interests include cultural heritage, contemporary anthropology, museology, material culture, memory studies, and the anthropology of waste. He explores how everyday objects, such as those found in yard sales or personal archives, mediate identity and collective memory.
His recent publications analyze the representation of extreme violence in museums, the cultural significance of garage sales in France and Sweden, and the curation of personal documents. These works reflect a transnational and interdisciplinary approach, often combining ethnographic observation with visual and textual analysis.
Dr. Debary has collaborated with prominent scholars including Howard S. Becker, Annette Becker, and James Clifford. His participation in the ACHS 2016 conference highlights his engagement with global debates on heritage transformation, particularly in the context of waste, cultural decay, and planetary crisis.
He is actively involved in research through the LAHIC team at IIAC, contributing to critical discussions on how heritage is constructed, contested, and transformed in contemporary societies.
