Dr. Nynke Smidt is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, Department of Epidemiology. She leads the Health Behavior Epidemiology unit and the Life Course Epidemiology research program at the SHARE Institute. Her research focuses on lifestyle determinants of healthy cognitive and physical aging, including physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, and alcohol consumption. She is Principal Investigator of the FINGER-NL study and co-leads the Ageinglines subcohort within Lifelines.
Education: Physiotherapy (cum laude) and Human Movement Sciences with specialization in Epidemiology.
Research Interests: Lifestyle interventions for cognitive health, biological pathways of aging, and reducing health inequalities. Key projects include the Netherlands Dementia Prevention Initiative (NDPI) and MOCIA consortium.
Grants & Collaborations: Leads national and regional consortia (e.g., Leernetwerk LEGrO, BIRD-NL) and collaborates with the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI). Over 115 peer-reviewed publications (H-index 32).
