Norman Chiu is a Professor of Chemistry and Adjunct Professor of Nanoscience at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). He also serves as Associate Department Head of the Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on analytical methods for biomarker detection, RNA modifications, and nanotoxicity. Chiu holds a B.Sc. (Hon) in Chemistry from the University of Liverpool, an M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Bristol, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Windsor. He completed postdoctoral training at Boston University and Sequenom Inc.
Research interests include epitranscriptomic analysis, ion mobility mass spectrometry for RNA modification differentiation, and carbon nanodots for biomedical applications. His work is funded by NIH collaborations with groups at Massachusetts General Hospital and NC State. The Chiu Research Group emphasizes method development for biomarker detection and has pioneered high-throughput toxicity screening using mass spectrometry. Over 50 students have been mentored, many progressing to academic and industry roles.
Publications highlight advancements in carbon nanodot toxicity, RNA modification analysis, and probiotic cell studies. Collaborations span institutions like Harvard, CDC, and Wake Forest University. The lab is located in Sullivan Science Building, Greensboro.
