Dr. Nora Slonimsky is an Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department at Iona University. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the Graduate Center, CUNY, an MA in American Studies from the same institution, and a BA in English Literature and History from Binghamton University. Her research focuses on political economy, legal history, communication, and book history in the 18th-century Anglophone world, with a particular emphasis on early America and digital humanities.
Dr. Slonimsky directs the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies, overseeing its minor program and coordinating the Hynes Institute Innovation ICT course. She serves as Social Media Editor for the Journal of the Early Republic and has published in Early American Studies, as well as platforms like The Junto and Teaching US History. Her forthcoming book, The Engine of Free Expression: Copyrighting Nation in Early America, won the SHEAR Dissertation Prize and was a Zuckerman Prize finalist.
Recent institutional highlights include securing a $1 million gift for the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies, a NSF grant to expand data literacy, and releasing a free e-book on digital-age revolutions. Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary digital and pedagogical innovations.
