Dr. Daniel E. Thiery is a Professor of Medieval History and Director of the Honors Program at Iona University. He holds a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from the University of Toronto (2003). His research focuses on medieval, renaissance, and reformation history, as well as the history of violence across eras. He teaches courses such as The History of Violence, which attracts interdisciplinary interest, and has authored influential works like Polluting the Sacred.
Thiery is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (2015) and has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Medieval Academy of America. His work bridges academia and public engagement, with projects like the Deep Time Archaeology initiatives and fieldwork at Lindisfarne. He previously advised Iona’s Cross Country team (2003–2015) and founded the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies.
Thiery’s expertise spans Latin, German, French, and English linguistic traditions. His current research includes a forthcoming book Heroic Restraint: A History of Violence, expanding on his signature course theme.
