Dr. Amy Sopcak-Joseph is an Associate Professor in the Global Cultures department at Wilkes University. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Connecticut and a BA in English and History from Dickinson College. Her scholarly work focuses on early American social, cultural, and economic history, with particular emphasis on women’s and gender history and the history of the book.

Dr. Sopcak-Joseph's research examines the intersection of media, gender, and racialized systems of power. She is currently revising her dissertation, Fashioning American Women: Godey’s Lady’s Book, Female Consumers, and Nineteenth-Century Periodical Publishing, into a book. Her work has been recognized with the Zuckerman Prize in American Studies (2020).
Her publications include peer-reviewed articles on distribution networks of 19th-century periodicals, book reviews on early American print culture, and public humanities blog posts like Following the Fashions: A Basic American Pastime (2018). She has received multiple fellowships, including from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Library Company of Philadelphia.

Dr. Sopcak-Joseph mentors students through initiatives like the History Research Lab, which provides summer primary source research opportunities. She has led students in digitizing Wilkes’ yearbooks (1947-2019) and organizing the Wilkes in 2020 collection during the pandemic. Her courses include American Women’s History, Introduction to Public History, and History and Memory of the American Civil War.
