Noe Montez is an Associate Professor of Theatre Studies at Emory University. His research focuses on Latine theatre, transitional justice in post-dictatorship Argentina, and doctoral education in the arts. He holds a PhD from Indiana University and is a former editor of Theatre Topics (2018–2021). Currently, he serves as Vice President for Publications at the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR) and Vice President for Professional Development at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE).
Montez has written Memory, Transitional Justice, and Theatre in Postdictatorship Argentina and co-edited the Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance. His current projects include studies on Black activism in sports and Critical University Studies frameworks for performance disciplines. He is also leading a large-scale investigation into PhD career trajectories in Theatre and Performance Studies since 2011.
His awards include the Mid-America Theatre Conference Robert A. Schanke Award and grants from ASTR for his work on doctoral education. As a practitioner, he works as a dramaturg, director, and actor with institutions like Cleveland Play House and Boston's Sleeping Weazel Theatre. His teaching emphasizes queer pedagogy and inclusive practices, supported by fellowships and service awards.
Montez has presented research at major conferences including the MLA, ASA, and Hemispheric Institute of Politics and Performance. His work bridges academic scholarship with community engagement, exemplified by projects like the Latina/o Theatre Wikiturgy initiative to decolonize digital archives.
