Shelley Orr is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Director of the MA in Theatre Arts program at San Diego State University (SDSU), housed in the School of Theatre, Television, and Film within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. She holds a BS in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, an MFA in Dramaturgy from UCSD, and a PhD in Theatre from the UCI/UCSD joint program. Her work focuses on 20th and 21st century theatre, with specialties in dramaturgy, play analysis, and the intersection of performance with urban and historical contexts.
Professionally, Orr has served as dramaturg for institutions like the San Diego Rep, The Old Globe, and Mo’olelo Theatre Company. Notable projects include dramaturging Marguerite Duras’s Savannah Bay at New York’s Classic Stage Company and Beckett’s Happy Days at La Jolla Playhouse. Her scholarship appears in Theatre Journal, Theatron, and Review: The Journal of Dramaturgy, exploring themes like virtual rehearsal techniques, audience participation, and the spatial dynamics of urban performance.
Orr has presented at annual meetings of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) and the Association for Theatre in Schools and Research (ASTR). She served as Past President of LMDA (Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas), reflecting her leadership in professional dramaturgical circles. Her research bridges academic and applied theatre, emphasizing collaboration between artists, scholars, and communities.
