Noam Pianko is the Samuel N. Stroum Chair of Jewish Studies and Professor in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He also directs the Samuel and Althea Stroum Center for Jewish Studies and holds the Herbert and Lucy Pruzan Professorship of Jewish Studies. His work bridges modern Jewish history, Zionism, and American Jewish identity. He earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2004.
Research focuses on redefining Zionism’s mission beyond state sovereignty, the evolution of 'Peoplehood' as an American-Jewish concept, and responses to 20th-century events like the Holocaust and Israeli statehood. His book Zionism and the Roads Not Taken (2010) examines interwar Jewish thinkers, while Peoplehood (2015) won the Saul Viener Book Prize for tracing how nationalism was adapted to American contexts.
His academic leadership includes directing the Stroum Center, fostering interdisciplinary Jewish studies programs, and shaping discussions on identity through grants and collaborations. Courses taught and affiliations include roles in history and international studies, though specific course titles are not detailed here.
