Michael Cohen is a Professor of Jewish Studies at Tulane University, holding the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Chair in the American Jewish Experience. He earned his A.B. from Brown University and Ph.D. from Brandeis University. His research focuses on American Jewish history, economic networks, and religious movements. Notable works include Cotton Capitalists (2017) and The Birth of Conservative Judaism (2012), which explore Jewish entrepreneurship and religious development in the U.S. He chairs the Association for Jewish Studies' Directors Group and advises the Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture. His work highlights ethnic networks' role in economic and religious transformation, emphasizing how Jewish communities navigated integration and identity in America.
Research interests include Reconstruction-era Jewish merchants, Conservative Judaism's origins, and Jewish migration patterns. Awards include the 2019 Saul Viener Book Prize (Honorable Mention) and the Ruth B. Fein Prize. Cohen lectures globally and contributes to interdisciplinary education at Tulane's School of Liberal Arts.
