Noah Randolph-Flagg is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Kentucky (starting Jan 2025). His research focuses on hydrothermal systems' roles in planetary habitability, critical mineral formation, and volcanic processes. He holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and has held roles at NASA Ames Research Center, including a NASA Postdoctoral Program fellowship.
Education: Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Science (UC Berkeley, 2019); B.A. in Geology (Carleton College, 2011). Additional training includes a Fulbright in Xi'an, China, and NSF fellowships.
Research emphasizes numerical modeling of groundwater systems, field observations in volcanic regions, and astrobiological applications. His work bridges Earth sciences with planetary exploration, particularly examining Mars and ocean worlds like Enceladus.
Awards include the 2023 NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal and multiple teaching awards. Active in outreach, his research has been featured in PBS documentaries and international media.
Grants include a 2025 NASA Habitable Worlds grant as Co-Investigator. He serves on NASA's Network for Ocean Worlds steering committee and reviews for journals like GSA Bulletin and Chemical Geology.
