Dr. Nir Barzilai is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, holding the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research. He directs the Institute for Aging Research, the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research, and the NIH Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in Basic Biology of Aging. His research focuses on the genetics of longevity, metabolic pathways in aging, and clinical trials targeting aging itself—most notably the TAME study with metformin.
Education: Graduated from The Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (1970s). Completed residencies at Hadassah Medical Center (Jerusalem) and fellowships in metabolism (Yale) and endocrinology (Cornell). Served in the Israel Defense Forces and conducted humanitarian work in Cambodia and South Africa.
Research Interests: Genetic determinants of exceptional longevity, metabolic decline with aging, and translational interventions. Key projects include the Longevity Genes Project (LGP) and LonGenity longitudinal study. His lab identified genomic differences in centenarians and explored hypothalamic regulation of aging via IGF-1 and leptin pathways.
Awards: Recipient of the Beeson Fellowship, Ellison Senior Scholar Award, Paul F. Glenn Award, and IPSEN Longevity Prize. Serves on editorial boards, NIH advisory panels, and co-founded biotech firms CohBar and Lifebioscience to develop anti-aging therapies.
Grants and Collaborations: NIH NIA grants, Ellison Foundation support, and FDA collaboration on aging drug trials. Advises Singapore’s Prime Minister on aging policy and speaks globally at venues like TEDMED and Vatican conferences.
Labs/Teams: Leads multidisciplinary teams at Einstein’s Aging Research Institute, with collaborations on mitochondrial peptides and aging pathways. Author of 280+ peer-reviewed papers and the book Age Later (2019).
