Nina Silber is the Jon Westling Professor of History at Boston University, where she has taught since 1990. She holds dual affiliations with the Department of History and the American and New England Studies Program. Her academic rank is Professor, and she has held significant fellowships, including the Charles Warren Fellowship at Harvard and a Fulbright Senior Lectureship in Prague.
Her research focuses on 19th- and early 20th-century American history, particularly the US Civil War, women’s history, and the American South. She has authored influential books like Divided Houses: Gender and the Civil War and This War Ain’t Over: Fighting the Civil War in New Deal America. Her work bridges academic scholarship with public history, including museum exhibitions and film projects.
Her articles explore themes such as Civil War memory in media, Reconstruction historiography, and gender roles during wartime. She has received prestigious awards for her contributions to historical research and education.
In addition to her academic roles, Silber served as President of the Society of Civil War Historians (2018–2020). Her public history projects highlight her commitment to making history accessible, such as collaborations with the Gettysburg National Military Park.
