J. Matthew Gallman is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Florida, where he has been affiliated since 2003. He previously taught at Loyola College, Gettysburg College, and Occidental College.

Research Interests: Gallman specializes in 19th Century American History, with a focus on the Civil War Era, the Union Home Front, and intersections of popular culture, political rhetoric, and social history. His work examines how ordinary citizens navigated questions of patriotism, duty, and personal sacrifice during wartime.
Publications: He is the author of four major books, including Defining Duty in the Civil War (2015) and America’s Joan of Arc: The Life of Anna Elizabeth Dickinson (2006). His current research explores political satire and rhetoric in the North during the Civil War.
Teaching: Gallman teaches undergraduate courses on the Civil War era and American Women’s History. At the graduate level, he offers courses on 19th Century America and a seminar on the Civil War.
