Nina Margies is a Lecturer in Urban and Regional Sociology at Humboldt University of Berlin's Faculty of Social Sciences. She is an accomplished researcher specializing in the sociology of emotions within urban contexts, with particular expertise in emotional responses to social crises and transformations of urban space.
Her research interests span emotions and social change, emotions and urban space, urban organizations (particularly fire brigades and police departments), and bodycam implementation in emergency services. Dr. Margies combines theoretical frameworks from Bourdieu's practice theory with emotional sociology to analyze how structural changes impact individual and collective emotional experiences.
Dr. Margies has established an impressive publication record including the book Emotions in Crisis (Bristol University Press, 2024) and numerous articles in top sociology journals such as Cultural Sociology and Sociology. Her 2024 article 'Making Sense of Change: Emotive-Cognitive Reframing of Young People in Post-crisis Spain' was nominated for the Cultural Sociology Sage Prize for Innovation and Excellence 2025. She co-founded The Urban Transcripts Journal, which received the Humboldt University Open Access Award.

Dr. Margies has held research positions at the Research Institute Casa de Velázquez in Madrid and has been a Visiting Scholar at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Université d'Ottawa. She currently serves as Editorial Board Member for Emotions and Society (since 2024) and as Member of the Advisory Board for the ESA Research Network RN11 – Sociology of Emotions. Her commissioned research for the Berlin Senate on bodycam implementation demonstrates her ability to connect academic research with practical policy applications.
Teaching responsibilities include Qualitative Methods, Urban Institutions as Emotional Spaces, and courses examining emotions in urban contexts. Her research on department stores and women's public life demonstrates historical depth to her analysis of urban emotional landscapes.
