Dr. Nils Roemer serves as Dean of the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology and Director of the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. He holds the Stan and Barbara Rabin Distinguished Professorship in Holocaust Studies and the Arts, Humanities, and Technology Distinguished University Chair. His academic journey includes a PhD in History from Columbia University (2000) and an M.S. in Modern German History from the University of Hamburg (1993).
Roemer’s research focuses on modern Jewish history, German-Jewish intellectual traditions, and Holocaust studies, with interdisciplinary engagement in cultural history, digital humanities, and consumer culture. He leads the Digital Studies of the Holocaust project, advancing innovative methods in memory visualization. His scholarly contributions include books like Jewish Scholarship and Culture in Nineteenth-Century Germany (2005) and German City, Jewish Memory: The Story of Worms (2010), alongside numerous articles and edited volumes.
Roemer has received significant recognition, including grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Board and fellowships from institutions like the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. He has held leadership roles at UT Dallas, serving on committees such as the Faculty Personnel Review and the Effective Teaching Committee, and previously led the School of Arts and Humanities as interim dean. His professional memberships include the American Association for Jewish Studies and editorial roles with the Journal of Modern Jewish Studies.
As Ackerman Center director, Roemer has expanded its international profile, hosting major events like the Annual Scholars’ Conference on the Holocaust and the Churches. His academic service spans roles at the University of Southampton (UK) and Ludwig-Maximilians University (Germany), reflecting a career dedicated to interdisciplinary scholarship and institutional leadership.
