Nikolaos Efstathiou is an Associate Professor in Nursing at the University of Birmingham, School of Nursing and Midwifery, with an honorary Adjunct Professor role at the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing. His clinical background in Critical Care integrates with academic research focused on palliative/end-of-life care decision-making, limitations of life-sustaining treatments, and qualitative methods like the Delphi Technique. He holds a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.
Education includes a PhD in Nursing (University of Glamorgan, 2004), MSc Nursing (University of Wales, 1996), and BNurs (TEI of Athens, 1992), with registration as a nurse since 1992.
Research priorities include regional palliative care planning, cancer nursing priorities, and inequities in palliative care. He has secured grants from the National Institute for Health and Care Research, UK charities, and European bodies, collaborating with NHS partners on translational research. His work bridges clinical practice and academic inquiry, emphasizing ethical decision-making in acute settings.
Teaching spans undergraduate BNurs programs and the Clinical Health Research MRes. He advises on end-of-life care in intensive care units, withdrawal of life-sustaining measures, and decision-making frameworks. His editorial roles include Associate Editor for Nursing in Critical Care journal and peer review for medical/nursing publications.
Recent publications address cancer care reviews, postvention support for healthcare staff, and pediatric palliative care guidelines. He collaborates globally, evidenced by multi-country studies on vaccination attitudes and palliative care needs in dementia populations.
