Dr. Nikolai Duffy is a Senior Lecturer and Co-Lead of the Poetry Research Group at Manchester Metropolitan University's Department of English, within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He also serves as Associate Head of the Postgraduate Arts and Humanities Centre. Duffy holds a PhD in experimental writing and philosophy from Goldsmiths, University of London (2005), alongside a BA and MA from the same institution.
His research focuses on contemporary poetry and poetics, critical-creative writing, intersections of literature with philosophy and visual art, and 19th–21st century American literature. Current projects include a critical-creative monograph on Lyric Hybrids and a novel. He has authored several books, including UP THE CREEK (2018) and edited Gap Gardening (2016), which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry (2017). His work has been performed globally and he runs the literary press Like This Press.
Duffy’s teaching includes modules on American Poetics and Creative Writing. He supervises PhDs on topics like eco-poetry and poetry and librettos. External roles include External Examiner for the MA Creative Writing at the University of Salford and grant reviewer for the Austrian Science Fund. Awards include a UNESCO residency (2019) and a PEN Award for Translation (2008).
His publications span poetry, essays, and interdisciplinary critiques, often addressing avant-garde practices, translation ethics, and experimental forms. He engages with figures like Rosmarie Waldrop, Samuel Beckett, and Maurice Blanchot, emphasizing dialogue between art forms and critical theory.
