Carol Ann Duffy is a Professor of Contemporary Poetry and Creative Director of the Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University. She teaches on the Poetry route of the MA and MFA Creative Writing programs and oversees city-wide literary initiatives. Her roles include leading national projects like the Manchester Children’s Book Festival and organizing 'Carol Ann Duffy and Friends' poetry events at the Royal Exchange Theatre. She served as UK Poet Laureate from 2009 to 2019.
Her academic credentials include a BA from the University of Liverpool and honorary doctorates from Liverpool, Keele, Hull, Warwick, the Open University, Dundee, and Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of Magdalen College and Homerton College, Cambridge.
Duffy’s research focuses on public poetry engagement, intergenerational collaboration, and accessibility in literature. Her initiatives like Poetry Together and Mother Tongue, Other Tongue emphasize inclusivity and community outreach. She has been recognized with prestigious awards including the Costa Poetry Award (2012), T.S. Eliot Prize (2005), and Whitbread Poetry Award (1993).
Her creative output spans poetry collections such as Mean Time, Love Poems, and The Bees, as well as children’s books like Queen Munch and Queen Nibble. She advocates for nurturing emerging writers through mentorship and festival management placements for students.
