Nik Morton is a Professor at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in the School of Science & Technology, serving as Director of the Centre for Systems Health and Integrated Metabolic Research. Previously, he held roles as Professor of Molecular Metabolism at the University of Edinburgh and led Post Graduate Research programs. His career includes Post-Doc work under Jonathan Seckl and fellowships from the Wellcome Trust, MRC, BHF, and Diabetes UK.
Education: PhD in molecular biology of obesity and diabetes from the University of Buckingham, followed by Post-Doc training at the University of Edinburgh.
Research focuses on genetics, biochemistry, and physiology underlying metabolic resilience, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Key interests include 'resilience genes', mechanisms of metabolic disease resistance, and translational drug discovery.
Publications emphasize genetic variants in metabolism, adipose tissue biology, and sulfurtransferase roles in metabolic health. Notable awards include Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship (2009), Wellcome Career Development Fellowship (2013), and a BHF PhD Programme renewal in 2021.
Advising and grants span multidisciplinary teams supported by major funders like Wellcome Trust, MRC, and BHF. Active in academic leadership, including roles on the Biochemical Society's Energy and Metabolism Panel and Diabetes UK grant review committees.
Labs/Teams: Directs NTU's Centre for Systems Health, leading research into integrated metabolic pathways and translational health solutions.
