Nicole Wagner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Oakland University. Her research examines how aquatic organisms are impacted by nutrients and anthropogenic stressors, with focal areas including eco-physiology and life-history traits of plankton, population dynamics and biogeochemical cycles. She employs combinations of laboratory experiments and observational studies to address critical questions in aquatic ecology.
Dr. Wagner's research interests span several interconnected areas of aquatic science:
- Stoichiometric regulation of toxin production in harmful cyanobacteria blooms
- Effects of nutrient and contaminant exposure on growth, life-history, and population dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton
- Biological responses to anthropogenic stressors in freshwater ecosystems
- Ecophysiology of plankton communities
- Nutrient cycling and biogeochemical processes in aquatic systems
Her publication record demonstrates expertise across multiple dimensions of aquatic ecology, with particular emphasis on harmful algal blooms, cyanobacteria physiology, and the stoichiometric relationships governing nutrient cycling. Her work frequently addresses the connections between nutrient availability, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, and the production of toxins in cyanobacterial blooms. Recent research has expanded into high-frequency monitoring of reservoir dynamics, spatial patterns of water clarity, and the application of remote sensing technologies for water quality assessment.
Dr. Wagner teaches BIO 4900/5900 Special Topics: Lake Ecology and leads the Limnology Lab at Oakland University, where she mentors students and collaborates with researchers across multiple institutions to advance understanding of freshwater ecosystems and address pressing environmental challenges related to water quality and harmful algal blooms.
