Nicole Jamison is a Lecturer in Early Childhood Education (Creative Arts and Play) at the Macquarie School of Education, Macquarie University. She serves as Course Director for Early Childhood undergraduate and postgraduate Initial Teacher Education (ITE) degrees (BEd, BTeach, BABEd, and MTeach) and is Assistant Director of the Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education (CRECE). She holds a Fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Her education includes a PhD in Early Childhood Education from the University of Alberta (2014–2022), an MEd in Early Childhood Education (2013–2014), an MA in Education and International Development from UCL Institute of Education (2010–2014), and prior degrees in Elementary Education and Medical Laboratory Science.
Research interests focus on play-based pedagogies, arts-informed methodologies, and intercultural practices in early childhood. Her interdisciplinary PhD examined how young immigrant children in Canada negotiate migration, identity, and culture through play and art-making. Key themes include child-led activities, minoritized children’s experiences, and culturally responsive education.
Her work has been funded by SSHRC, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, and the University of Alberta. Recent articles explore responsive pedagogies, cultural navigation through art, and numeracy education. She has presented widely on topics like iPad integration in multiliteracy, video-based professional development, and intercultural early childhood practices.
Awards include the FHEA and research grants from SSHRC and Killam Trusts. Teaching responsibilities span courses like ECHE1130 (Play-Based Learning) and ECHE8290 (Professional Experience 3). She mentors educators and collaborates on projects such as the RAISED model for intercultural practice.
Labs/teams include CRECE, focusing on early childhood research and policy. Future work emphasizes amplifying minoritized children’s voices and advancing play-based, arts-integrated curricula.
