Nicole Eggers is an Associate Professor of African History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History. Her research focuses on 20th-21st century Congolese history, health and healing, refugees, and religion and politics in Central Africa. She holds a Ph.D. in African History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2013).
Her research explores spiritual and social healing during upheavals, gender-power dynamics, and refugee experiences. Eggers leads an NEH-funded collaborative project on religion in Congolese refugee communities, conducting oral histories in East African camps and Knoxville. She emphasizes African voices and critical historical methods in teaching.
Eggers' publications analyze religious movements like Kitawala, decolonization, and state violence. Her 2023 book Unruly Ideas examines Kitawala's evolution, while her 2020 co-edited volume discusses UN decolonization efforts. Recent articles address customary authority and pandemic-era state violence.
