Nicole Archambeau is an Associate Professor of History at Colorado State University, specializing in medieval history with a focus on Mediterranean Europe and the social history of healing and medicine. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research investigates the intersection of medical practices, religious rituals, and socio-political contexts in the later Middle Ages.
Her first book, Souls under Siege: Stories of Plague, War, and Confession in Fourteenth-Century Provence (2021), explores how communities navigated crises like the Black Death and mercenary warfare through the lens of confession and healing. Current projects include Galen in the Garden, examining agricultural spaces as sites of health care for humans, animals, and plants, and the role of beeswax in spiritual and physical healing.
Publications span refereed journals, peer-reviewed book chapters, and online articles, addressing topics like relic-based healing, epidemic narratives, and emotional health in medieval contexts. She teaches courses such as HIST 392 (Historical Methods), HIST 309 (Medieval Christianity), and HIST 313 (Law and Justice in the Middle Ages).
Graduate students working with her must read Latin primary sources. Her research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, blending social history, material culture, and digital humanities to contextualize medieval healthcare practices.
