Suzanne BRAY is a Professor of British Literature and Civilization at the Catholic Institute of Lille, Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences. She is an active academic specializing in British religious literature, particularly focusing on the intersection of faith and literary expression in 20th century England.
Her educational background includes a Doctorate in British civilization (1999, Lille III) on the theme of "Writers and apologists in Great Britain 1900-1963" and a Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (2007, University of Caen) on "Literature, religious thought and cultural history in Great Britain in the 20th century."
Professor BRAY's research interests span religious ideas in the United Kingdom in the 20th century, British literature and theology, bestsellers and minor genres (detective novels, fantasy, children's literature in English), and media and religion in England. She has extensively studied authors including CS Lewis, Charles Williams, Dorothy L. Sayers, GK Chesterton, TSEliot, JK Rowling, PD James, and Madeleine L'Engle.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on fantasy literature as theological expression, particularly examining Harry Potter, Madeleine L'Engle's works, and the theological dimensions of detective fiction. She explores how these genres convey religious themes, spiritual journeys, and moral frameworks through literary devices and narrative structures.
Professor BRAY serves on the editorial boards of Mélanges de Science Religieuse and SEVEN, an international journal published at the Marion E. Wade Center, Wheaton College, Illinois. She has directed numerous academic conferences including "Crime, Violence et Culture" (2012) and "La Vocation au féminin" (2014).
She has directed the Master's in Research in English Studies at the Catholic Institute of Lille and serves on the scientific council of the institution. Her academic activities include regular presentations at international conferences, particularly focusing on British Christian authors and their literary contributions.
