Isabelle OLIVIER is a Lecturer in French Literature at the University of Artois, affiliated with the Texts and Cultures Research Center where she contributes to the "TransLittéraires" and "Literatures and Cultures of Childhood" teams. Her academic work bridges medieval literary traditions with contemporary children's literature, focusing on how historical narratives transform across cultural contexts.
Education:
- Doctorate in Medieval Literature, Stendhal University (Grenoble 3), 2005
- Thesis: "Arthurian Odysseys. Adventures and Insularity in Arthurian Novels of the 12th-13th Centuries" (Supervised by Philippe Walter)
Her research centers on the dynamic relationship between medieval literary heritage and modern cultural production, particularly examining how Arthurian legends, Celtic mythology, and medieval motifs are reimagined in contemporary fantasy and children's literature. She investigates the pedagogical dimensions of these adaptations, analyzing how medievalism functions in educational contexts and how fantasy genres cultivate critical thinking about values and ethics among young readers. Her work reveals consistent patterns of intertextual dialogue where contemporary authors deliberately engage with medieval narrative structures while adapting them to modern sensibilities.
OLIVIER actively shapes academic discourse through conference organization including the 2019 "Medieval Literature and Culture in Secondary Education" symposium and the 2024 "Does the Middle Ages Sell?" colloquium. Her teaching focuses on "Medievalisms," "Poetry," and "Poetry and School Poetry" within the University of Artois's distance-learning Master's program in Childhood and Youth Literature, while also contributing to teacher training at University of Lille-INSPE. She has developed significant digital resources including a MOOC chapter on fantasy literature and maintains active scholarly engagement through YouTube lecture series exploring the cultural dimensions of genre literature.
