Nicole Brisch is a Professor of Assyriology at the University of Hamburg, where she researches Sumerian literature, socio-economic history of ancient Iraq, and Mesopotamian religion. She previously held academic positions at the University of Copenhagen, University of Cambridge, and Freie Universität Berlin.
Her education includes an MA in Assyriology from Freie Universität Berlin (1996) and a PhD in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan (2003). Postdoctoral work was conducted at Cornell University and University of Chicago.
Research focuses on temple archives from Nippur, divine kingship traditions, and gender roles in ancient religious institutions. She directs the project 'Archival Practices in Ancient Iraq' and co-edits the volume Women and Religion in the Ancient Near East and Asia.
Recent publications explore the intersection of manuscript traditions with religious performances across cultures. Awards include the Einar Hansen Research Prize and fellowship at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
