Nicolas Lux Fawzi is a Professor of Medical Science in the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry at Brown University. His research focuses on structural and biophysical characterization of intrinsically disordered proteins implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly TDP-43 in ALS and FUS in frontotemporal dementia. He employs advanced NMR spectroscopy, molecular simulations, and biophysical methods to study liquid-liquid phase separation and protein aggregation mechanisms.
- PhD in Bioengineering from University of California, Berkeley and UCSF
- Postdoctoral training at NIH with G. Marius Clore
Research highlights include:
- Structural analysis of TDP-43 phase separation and aggregation
- Mechanistic studies of FUS protein assembly pathways
- Investigating post-translational modifications in neurodegenerative disease
- Developing computational tools for phase separation modeling
- Exploring therapeutic strategies targeting protein condensates
His laboratory utilizes 500MHz, 600MHz, and 850MHz Bruker NMR spectrometers through Brown's Structural Biology Core Facility. Collaborations span molecular biology, neuroscience, and computational biology domains.
Scientific honors include:
- Whitaker Foundation Graduate Fellowship (2002)
- Sacconi Centennial Grant (2012)
- American Chemical Society Postdoctoral Award (2012)
