Professor Nicola Wake is a leading academic in criminal law and justice at Northumbria University's Faculty of Business and Law. She holds the position of Honorary Subject Sections Secretary for the Society of Legal Scholars and leads the Law Department in its pursuit of the Athena Swan Silver Award. Her research focuses on vulnerable offenders, particularly domestic abuse survivors, human trafficking, and secure estate policies. She actively supervises PhD candidates and mentors academic colleagues while maintaining leadership roles in programme design and validation processes.
Her research interests span criminal law reform, domestic abuse legal frameworks, and juvenile justice systems. Recent work includes groundbreaking studies on self-defence frameworks for domestic abuse survivors and comparative analyses of diminished responsibility determinations. She has secured prestigious funding and is advancing impactful policy reforms through her scholarship.
Professor Wake holds a PhD in Law (2016) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2012). Her teaching expertise includes associate head leadership and external examining roles. She contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives like expressive interventions in youth justice and child-first secure accommodation redesign.
