Nicola Marzari is a Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and heads the Laboratory for Materials Simulations at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). He also serves as director of the National Centre on Computational Design and Discovery of Novel Materials funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and holds an Excellence Chair at the University of Bremen.

His research focuses on quantum-mechanical simulations to predict properties of novel materials and devices. His group's open-access software supports over 4,000 annual publications globally.
Over 30 former group members now hold faculty positions at institutions like MIT, Harvard, and EPFL, with 5 receiving US NSF CAREER Awards. He previously held the Toyota Chair at MIT and the first Statutory Chair of Materials Modelling at the University of Oxford.
