Jan Hugo Dil is a Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and a Scientist and Subgroup Leader at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), leading the COPHEE end station for spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES). He holds a SNSF-funded professorship and oversees the development of novel spin detectors. His research focuses on spin properties of materials under reduced dimensionality, including Rashba effects, ferroelectric/multiferroic systems, and quantum mechanical time-scale investigations.
Education:
- Bachelor in Philosophy, Radford University, Virginia
- Physics studies at Delft University of Technology
- PhD from the Fritz Haber Institute and Freie Universität Berlin
Research Interests: Exploring how structural symmetry influences spin properties, particularly in surfaces/interfaces (e.g., Rashba effect), polar/ferroelectric materials, and multiferroic systems. Recent work includes quantum time-scale determination and the nature of time in materials. His techniques include SARPES and operando measurements under electric fields.
Awards:
- Heinrich Rohrer Rising Medal (2014)
- University Latsis Prize (2015)
Advising & Grants: Active in international doctoral schools (e.g., Hercules School in Grenoble) and proposal review committees. Leads SARPES activities at the Swiss Light Source, emphasizing cutting-edge instrumentation and collaborative research.
Labs/Teams: Responsible for the COPHEE end station at PSI, a hub for SARPES experiments and spin-detection innovation.
