Steven Van Petegem

Steven Van Petegem is a PartTime Lecturer at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in the School of Engineering, while primarily working as a Senior Scientist at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). He focuses on in situ and operando X-ray diffraction to study metal microstructural changes during processing, with applications in additive manufacturing and mechanical deformation.

His research involves developing experimental devices like a miniaturized selective laser melting device for 3D printing studies and biaxial deformation rigs for real-time diffraction experiments. Collaborative work includes neutron diffraction during deformation and synchrotron-based studies on FCC metals.

He teaches the master course Materials Science at Large Scale Facilities and supervises PhD students at EPFL. His responsibilities at PSI include coordinating additive manufacturing experiments and representing the Photon Science Division in environmental task forces.
