Nick Mitchell is a Senior Research Fellow at King's College London, based in the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy, School of Security Studies, and Department of War Studies. He has held this position since 2012, focusing on outreach to UK exporters of proliferation-sensitive equipment and technologies. Prior to this, he spent 33 years in the UK Department of Trade and Industry exclusively on non-proliferation, counter-proliferation, and export control work since 1989.
His research expertise spans non-proliferation policy implementation, nuclear security frameworks, and technology transfer controls. He has firsthand experience enforcing UN Sanctions against Iraq, coordinating international counter-proliferation efforts, and negotiating at Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) conferences in New York and Geneva. Current projects include 'Managing Technology Transfer in Universities & Research Institutes' (ITT) to prevent proliferation-sensitive knowledge transfer, and the 'Proliferation Finance Observatoire' (PFO) platform strengthening global Countering Proliferation Finance (CPF) capacities.
Mitchell leads ongoing collaborations with UK government departments, international partners, and exporters through the ITT and PFO initiatives. He operates from the Centre for Science & Security Studies at King's Strand Campus (K4L.04), leveraging his extensive background in export licensing, nuclear safeguards, and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) program interdiction.
