Professor Christopher Hobbs is a Professor of Science and International Security at King's College London's Department of War Studies and Director of the King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies (KIASS). He holds a PhD in physics from the University of London and a MPhys from Oxford University. His research focuses on bridging policy and practice in nuclear security, non-proliferation, and open-source intelligence (OSINT), emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and collaboration with international organizations, governments, and industry. He has led major initiatives like the UK’s Nuclear Security Culture Programme (NSCP) since 2014 and secured grants from agencies including the IAEA, UK FCO, BEIS, US State Department, and NDA.
Education: PhD in Physics (University of London, 2006), MPhys (University of Oxford, 2002).
Research interests include nuclear security culture, WMD counter-proliferation, CBRN terrorism, insider threats, and radiation detection for border monitoring. He has published widely in journals like Science and Global Security and co-authored major works such as The Oxford Handbook of Nuclear Security.
Professional roles: Member of the International Nuclear Security Forum’s Executive Advisory Board, former Chair of the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN), and Associate Fellow of Advance HE. Current projects include cybersecurity research, nuclear supply chain integrity, and conflict health studies.
Grants and funding: Major projects include the Nuclear Security Culture Programme and collaborations with the IAEA on counterfeit materials. Supervises PhD students in his research areas and teaches courses on nuclear weapon security, science-policy interfaces, and CBRN counter-terrorism.
Labs/Initiatives: Leads the Cyber Security Research Group (CSRG), King’s Cybersecurity Centre, and the Centre for Conflict & Health Research. Ongoing projects address nuclear security implications of counterfeit items and cybersecurity threats.
