Professor Nick Emmel serves as Professor of Social Research Methodology at the School of Sociology and Social Policy within the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Leeds. A world-leading realist methodologist, he is lead editor of 'Doing Realist Research' (SAGE, 2018) and author of 'Sampling and Choosing Cases in Qualitative Research: A Realist Approach' (SAGE, 2013). He directs the Advanced Qualitative Methods Training for the ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership and leads the interdisciplinary MA Social Research program.
His academic credentials include a PhD and BSc(Hons), complemented by professional registration as a Registered General Nurse (RGN).
Research focuses on realist methodology applied to vulnerability and flourishing, particularly regarding health service access and health inequalities. He pioneered qualitative longitudinal and mixed methods approaches for hard-to-reach populations in low-income UK and Indian communities, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions to complex social puzzles. His work addresses both international and local (Leeds) health inequities through innovative participatory methods.
Emmel secured major funding from the ESRC’s Research Methods Programme, National Centre for Research Methods, and Timescapes initiative. He currently leads #RealismLeeds—a collaborative network of 30+ academics—and provides research methods training across the university and White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership.
He actively supervises postgraduate researchers including Gerry Asila, Alzari, and Liam Greenacre while engaging public, private, and third-sector organizations in realist evaluation design and implementation.
