Sarah Irwin is Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds, School of Sociology and Social Policy (Faculty of Social Sciences). She serves as Director of the Centre for Research on Families, the Life Course and Generations (FLaG), Co-Chair of the University of Leeds Just Transitions Taskforce, and SSP Impact and Engagement Lead. Her career includes prior positions as Research Fellow (University of Essex) and Lecturer (University of York).

Research Expertise: Irwin's work spans sociological analysis of family dynamics, educational disparities, youth transitions, and subjective experiences of inequality. Her current research investigates public perceptions of climate change, social inequalities, and policy engagement. She specializes in qualitative longitudinal methodologies and has led major ESRC projects including CAVA, Real Life Methods, and Timescapes.

- BSA Philip Abrams Memorial Prize for her book Rights of Passage
Teaching & Supervision: She convenes the 'Sociology and the Climate Crisis' module and leads the Applied Research Project for MSc Inequalities and Social Science, partnering with external organizations. She currently supervises doctoral candidates Karen Tatham and Emma Hyde and has extensive PhD examination experience.
Leadership: Directs FLaG research center focusing on family and generational studies, and co-chairs the university-wide Just Transitions Taskforce to advance climate justice research frameworks.
