Nick Dorward is a Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Southampton, specializing in Political Geography, Urban Studies, and Global Development. He holds a PhD from the University of Bristol, where he also served as a Lecturer and ESRC Fellow until 2022. His research focuses on the demographic and political consequences of urbanization in low- and middle-income countries, with particular attention to protest mobilization, spatial demographic analysis, and poverty mapping. Methodologically, he employs spatial statistical models, geographic data science, and causal inference techniques.
Prior to his current position, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Bristol. His recent work includes studies on conflict patterns in Africa, urban-rural political violence dynamics, and the intersection of urbanization and political change. He is actively supervising PhD students and accepting new applications in these areas.
Key contributions include analyzing Africa’s emerging urban geographies, spatial-demographic trends, and the interplay between urbanization and governance. His research has been published in high-impact journals such as African Affairs, Political Geography, and Environment and Urbanization.
