Professor Gerry Stoker is a part-time Chair in Governance at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on democratic renewal, governance failings, trust in political institutions, place-based politics, and behavioral change strategies. He has held professorial roles at institutions including Strathclyde, Manchester, and the University of Canberra (2014–2021). Key publications include Why Politics Matters and Saving Democracy, exploring democratic decline and revitalization. His work spans governance theory, political methodology, and civic engagement, with notable contributions to understanding political trust through projects like TrustGov.
Stoker’s research has been supported by major grants from the ESRC, EPSRC, and others, addressing topics such as governance failures, nuclear energy policy, and community co-production. His interdisciplinary approach integrates experimental methods (e.g., field trials on 'nudge' strategies) with theoretical analysis. Current projects examine trust dynamics in global governance and the political consequences of geographic inequality.
His academic trajectory includes earlier work on local government and urban politics, reflected in foundational texts like Transforming Local Governance. Collaborations with scholars like Will Jennings and Nick Clarke highlight his role in shaping contemporary political science discourse through edited volumes like Theory and Methods in Political Science.
