Nick Abbey serves as a full-time Lecturer in Jazz and Contemporary Bass at Edith Cowan University's Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), where he also functions as First Year Student Officer. Teaching across all music specializations from diploma to postgraduate levels, he covers performance, research, recording, and music business skills.
His educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy from Edith Cowan University (2019), Bachelor in Music with First Class Honours (2012), and Bachelor of Music Major in Jazz Performance (2008), complemented by a TAE40116 qualification (2021).
Abbey's research focuses on practice-led investigations into adapting to evolving arts practice contexts, composition methodologies, and optimal music pedagogy. His creative work manifests through award-winning compositions and performances that bridge jazz traditions with contemporary innovations. Current projects include a solo double bass audio-visual recording and collaborations between his jazz/hip-hop trio TRISK with vocalists and MCs.
His scholarly output reveals consistent exploration of cross-cultural jazz fusion and contemporary performance practices, with recent works like East meets West: Cross-cultural imaginings (2023) demonstrating international artistic dialogue. Publications span creative compositions, performance recordings, and analytical research on rhythmic structures in jazz.
