Matt Allen is a Lecturer and Academic Coordinator of Contemporary Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Edith Cowan University, based at Mount Lawley campus where he teaches Contemporary Principal Study and Ensemble courses across undergraduate and honours music programs.

Dr Allen's research centers on singing voice science and pedagogy with specific focus on R&B/soul belting physiology, aiming to transform contemporary vocal teaching methods. He has presented expert panels for the Australian Voice Association and conferences for ANATS and MSA.
His creative research outputs demonstrate expertise in vocal arranging and performance, particularly through gospel choir collaborations with the Perth Symphony Orchestra and international festival appearances, spanning contemporary pop, gospel, and tributes to iconic artists like Stevie Wonder and George Michael.
He currently supervises two PhD students investigating contemporary cross-genre vocal training for musical theatre and lyric-driven composition in improvised music. As founder of the WAAPA Gospel Choir—a flagship ensemble with over 90 singers—he previously expanded the Contemporary Voice department to record enrollment.
