Fred Grigson is a full-time Lecturer in Jazz Guitar at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Edith Cowan University, where he teaches in the Jazz and Contemporary programs. With 28 years of professional experience, he is recognized as one of Australia's most versatile guitarists, renowned for his melodic improvisation across diverse genres and collaborations with icons like Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, and John Farnham.
His educational background includes studies at Berklee College of Music (Boston) and the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne), supplemented by formal teaching qualifications: Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (Edith Cowan University, 2013) and Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training (TAFE WA, 2004). He credits jazz legends Jim Hall and John Scofield as key influences in developing his distinctive voice.
Specializing in jazz performance research, Grigson explores groove-melody interplay in ensembles, particularly organ trios. His creative work emphasizes melodic authenticity across genres, influenced by Coltrane and Montgomery. Recent outputs reveal a consistent focus on live performance dynamics in Perth venues like the Ellington Jazz Club, with recurring themes of ensemble cohesion and rhythmic innovation in small-group settings.
As an active performer, he leads the TLC Organ Trio and Freddie Grigson Quartet, frequently collaborating with Western Australia's premier jazz musicians. While student supervision details are unspecified, his career bridges academic instruction and professional artistry through regular festival appearances and recordings like his album 'Blue Zone', which features emerging WA talent.
