Mark Simeon Ferguson is a Lecturer at the Elder Conservatorium of Music within the University of Adelaide's Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics. As Head of Jazz, he maintains an active dual career as both educator and professional musician.
His research interests center on contemporary jazz composition, orchestral writing, and music for primary education. Ferguson specializes in Afro-Caribbean musical traditions, song-writing for upper primary students, and modern jazz piano trio arrangements. His creative output bridges academic rigor with professional practice through commissions for major Australian ensembles.
Recent artistic output demonstrates significant trends in cultural reconciliation through Kaurna language integration and environmental storytelling via works like String Quartet No. 1: The precarious existence of the Plucky Hooded Plover. His compositions increasingly explore Australian identity narratives through regional landscapes (Beltana ghost town project) and urban experiences (North Terrace song cycle).
- APRA AMCOS Luminary Award for South Australia (2022)
- National Jazz Awards Finalist (1999)
Ferguson maintains extensive professional performance activities as Musical Director for major festivals including Adelaide Cabaret Festival's Variety Gala, Opening Gala, and Walk of Fame events. His educational leadership includes developing the Jazz Arranging curriculum and leading international study tours to New York City and Washington DC. He directs the Elder Conservatorium's Latin Jazz Ensemble and teaches Jazz Musicianship, Piano, and Improvisation.
His creative practice extends to commissioning relationships with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian String Quartet, and Six Foot Something theatre company, establishing him as a key figure in South Australia's contemporary music ecosystem.
